Mold release agents are specialized lubricants that assist in the removal of a molded part from the die. The majority of mold release agents are applied in spray form, although certain materials may be applied in liquid or semi-liquid form. Polytetrafluoroethylene, or PTFE, is regularly used in certain release agents, as it provides exceptional performance for a wide range of surfaces and temperatures.

A number of other substances are used as release agents, from soy-based, biological safe solutions to castor oil and alcohol mixtures. Other materials include Potter’s (Green) soap, water soluble oil, wax-based mixtures, and silicone. These substances provide a barrier between the mold and the die, allowing it to be easily released after being processed. Proper choice of a release agent depends largely on the material to be molded, as well as the nature of the molding method employed and the material of the die. The removal of concrete molds, for example, is facilitated by Castor oil, Potter’s soap and similar substances; Castor oil is also an effective means of releasing latex molds. Other solvents and oils are used to facilitate removal of polyurethane, silicone rubber, and polyesters.

Mold release agents can be designed to enhance the surface characteristics of the mold, reducing scuffs and other surface flaws encountered during fabrication or removal. Additionally, they can help provide low- or high-gloss finishes, as well as promote various surface textures. Various release agents will provide semi-permanent or permanent films during mold fabrication; these films are generally engineered to provide a transparent or translucent surface that does not alter the visual surface characteristics of the mold.

Many manufacturing methods are made possible by release agents, including investment and lost wax casting, plastic injection molding and rubber and foam molding. Manufacturers typically offer a variety of purchasing options, ranging from small spray canisters for limited use, to large drums for bulk processing operations. Substances may be rated for a variety of environmental and performance characteristics.
