Blowers serve three main functions: heating, cooling and air flow. Although unit designs range from simple and complex, most blowers usually consist of some type of fan-like apparatus. Some blowers also use pressure pumps to move air or gases.

Heating blowers direct warm or hot air into cooler areas. These blowers are useful in drying, melting, welding and shrinking operations. They enable users to focus extreme heat in specialized areas, whether in an industrial heating chamber or conveyor section. Many industrial driers can be classified as heating blowers.

The term blower, however, often refers to cooling fans and centrifugal blowers. Cooling fans are used in a variety of devices, such as computers, heavy machinery and air conditioning systems. In machines and mechanisms with high temperature outputs, these fans prevent overheating and part degradation. Blowers used for cooling purposes either send cooler air into a system or facility (air conditioners) or draw away the hot air (exhaust fans). A ceiling exhaust fan is even a good example of a cooling blower.

Blowers are also used to promote air flow. In some cases, they redirect dangerous gases to decontamination areas or simply expunge unnecessary byproducts. Other blowers are used in coating operations or to remove dust and powder. These blowers are fundamental to many manufacturing processes and cleanroom applications. They are also important components of fume hoods, refrigeration equipment and plastic extrusion systems.

Most blower systems operate according to integrated sensors. These sensors can be as basic as a thermostat or as involved as a series of pressure, flow and temperature meters. The blower is programmed to turn off and on, or to perform at different rates, according to the sensor data. Blower capacities are typically measured in cubic feet per minute (cfm), which is the amount of air volume moved by the blower. Users also treasure blower devices with a low sound output.
