Boring is the enlargement of a pre-made hole in a component or material. In many cases, boring services are used to correct any imperfections in an existing hole. Although boring is basically a turning service, it does not always require a turning machine. In certain machines, the component is kept in place while worked with a rotating tool.

Boring can be done with a lathe. A lathe is a machine tool that rotates a component or work-piece so that the work performed retains an integral symmetry. Lathes range from simple woodworking varieties to complex computer controlled machines used for mass production. However, boring can also be performed by a number of other machining tools, such as specialized boring machines. These devices include vertical, jig, horizontal, and mass production boring machines.

The majority of specialized boring machines are very similar to lathes with comparable functions, except for a few modified features. Vertical boring machines, for instance, use toolheads rather than a turret. Vertical boring machines are very useful for boring large holes. Horizontal borers are more effective at making longer holes. They are also useful for boring a chain of aligned holes. Mass production borers, as you might expect, are ideal for long-run boring operations. They are designed to repeat a specific task or series of tasks. By and large, these machines are almost totally automated, and operate with high precision despite the amount of work performed.

Boring services are effective from prototype through production, to custom or standard dimensions. They serve a variety of industries, including aerospace, heavy industry, automotive, nuclear and military. Many manufacturers offering boring services also feature a variety of related operations, such as turning, milling and CNC machining. Although boring itself seems like a highly specialized machining function, it yields a vast array of components, and is an indispensable part of modern manufacturing.
