Whether used for storage, transport, safety or protection, boxes are a mainstay in modern industry. In large degree, this is due to the extensive use of cardboard boxes, which dominate shipping, storage and packaging operations across the world. Everything from food and furniture to home appliances and machine parts are stored, shipped and sold in cardboard boxes; few other containers can match their durability, versatility and cost-effectiveness.

However, boxes are also used in an endless variety of other applications, and are available in virtually any design or material. Metal boxes are used to guard components of heavy machinery and electrical circuits, or to shield certain areas from radiation or environmental factors. Paper and plastic boxes are extremely versatile marketing devices, as well as effective storage containers. Glass, wood and precious metal boxes are often prized decorative pieces, whether as music boxes, jewelry boxes or ornaments.

Boxes incorporate a wide assortment of closing and locking mechanisms, including knobs, handles, combination locks, key locks, catches, latches and buttons. Box tops may be removable, hinged or sliding, depending on the design of the container, and a number of other designs are also available. In the case of shipping boxes, various packaging materials are used to seal the box and protect the contents. Styrofoam, paper, bubble tape and cardboard are all common materials used to prevent damage to shipped goods. Packing tape, nails, screws and staples are typically employed to seal cargo and shipping boxes after the goods have been packaged.

Boxes are labeled using a variety of printing and branding processes, including thermal transfer, inkjet printing, laser printing and direct thermal labeling. These techniques allow manufacturers to include product and company information, bar codes and safety information on all products. In many large scale operations, boxes are pre-printed, assembled through an automated process and sealed after product insertion.
