Cam locks are light duty locks that use a metal arm as their locking mechanism. They are regularly used in cabinets, drawers and small doors, and are frequently the lock of choice for office equipment and storage cabinets. The metal locking arm can be attached to a variety of access devices, such as a key tumbler lock, a combination lock or a tubular lock. In locked position, the arm slides across the inside of the stationary portion of the cabinet or drawer, preventing it from being moved. The arm itself can be either straight or offset; offset arms allow for larger distances between the moving door and stationary components.

A wide range of cam locks are produced, each providing a different level of security based on access type, material and construction. Important measurements for cam locks are mounting hole diameter, cam length (the length of the metal arm), and maximum latching distance. In some cases the head diameter is also needed. Generally, these measurements will accord with a standard door or drawer thickness.

Cam locks are manufactured with a number of locking solutions, from standard key types to combination locks. In case of emergency or key loss, typical key opened cam locks can be opened by master keys, which are designated by the make and model of the lock. Combination locks provide a unique locking solution for storage compartments that need to be accessed by multiple individuals. Non-standard key type cam locks are also produced, including flat, tubular, high-security and circle keys.

A wide variety of electronic and vending equipment uses cam locks. Materials used include die cast zinc and stainless steel; finishes include polished chrome, nickel and brass. Weather resistant and miniature cam locks are also available. Cam locks can be mounted in everything from fiberglass and metal to wood and glass.
