Essentially shelving, storage, transport and waste disposal units set on casters or wheels, carts are available in a wide range of designs. They are versatile enough to be used in industrial, commercial, domestic and corporate applications, as well as serving a variety of janitorial, containment and heavy duty transport functions.

Basic hand carts are mainstays in warehouses throughout the world, and allow operators to move large loads and cumbersome objects with little physical safety risk. These carts may be designed to handle standard objects, such as plastic and cardboard boxes, or can be shaped to carry cylindrical containers, such as gas and water tanks, or various machine components. Various handle grips are available for hand carts, including pin, dual and loop handles, which provide different maneuverability and comfort options. Typically, these carts are manufactured from strong, durable metal, but are designed to be as lightweight as possible. Common varieties use a simple steel frame, pneumatic rubber tires, and a flat load plate. Some heavy duty trucks can safely transport loads weighing more than one thousand pounds.

Carts are also used to transport more sensitive equipment, including computers, electronics, medical components, and documents. Each type of product demands a different cart design; carts used for various electronic components, for example, often include rack mounts that allow the equipment to be locked into place. Computer carts may feature similar designs, or may be engineered to allow quick and easy access to specific sections. Other carts include hanging file mounts or filing drawers to assist in document transport and storage.

Waste disposal and bulk handling cards are generally fashioned from durable synthetics, such as polyethylene. They facilitate the transport of a wide variety of waste products, and serve as temporary storage. Hamper carts provide a simple way to move a large amount of laundry or similar items within a facility. Other carts may feature special storage areas for tools, or modified holding surfaces for specific products.
