A coating is a type of covering that is placed on an object in order to protect it or to change its appearance. Coatings can be gases, liquids, or solids. Because of the great need of coating in industrial processes, many coating services are available.
Painting is a common and simple example of coating services. Other coating services, however, are more complex. One of these coating services is plating. Plating is a technique that uses metal to coat other surfaces. Plating is often used in the creation of mobile phones, computers, and electronic devices. It is also used for decorative purposes, such as coating items with a gold or silver exterior.
Another example of coating services is anodizing. Anodizing is used on aluminum to protect it from corrosion and abrasion. It is also used to prepare aluminum to be dyed. Because anodized aluminum products have high aesthetic appeal and resilience, it is often used to make paintball guns and other extreme sports equipment.
Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is another of the many forms of coating services available. CVD is a chemical process that deposits thin films of materials on other substances. Typically, CVD involves exposing a substrate to at least one volatile precursor. These react with each other and decompose on the surface of the substrate, which creates the desired deposit. Volatile byproducts are often produced in this process, as well, and need to be removed through a reaction chamber. Some products that use CVD coating services include semiconductors and the production of synthetic diamonds.
Another of the many types of coating services is sputtering. This process ejects atoms from a solid material into a gas phase. This is accomplished by bombarding the material with energetic ions. Sputtering coating services are commonly used for windows, particularly double-paned, to assist with filtering sunlight and resisting water vapor.
