Contract packaging is used by virtually every business in some way. Packaging functions can range from the very simple type of packaging to very complex. Contract packaging can be used for all kinds of products, too, including the packaging of hazardous materials. Service for contract packaging can range from designing the packaging, to warehousing to distribution and using efficient resources and wise marketing techniques. Many companies that produce products rely on contract manufacturing or outsourcing to package their goods, as well.

Contract packaging companies often look to save money by trying to reduce the waste used by their product. Also, they often rely on finding the most efficient way to transport and distribute their items so the costs are not passed on to the consumer. Using recycled products and educating consumers about recycling also helps cut cost and reduce waste.

Virtually every item found in a store is packaged using contract packaging. Think of something as simple as a package of juice boxes—a box, a packaged straw and an outer package are all necessary for this item. Bread, cosmetics, canned goods, meat, cereal and dairy products are also examples of everyday items that require contract packaging services. Similarly, other products that also use these types of products range from pharmaceutical companies to paint manufacturers. A wide variety of materials are also used during the packaging process. Plastics products, such as bags and bottles, and glass packaging are even more examples of materials used in contract packaging.

Companies that specialize in contract packaging often use a series of automated machinery, conveyor systems, laborers and even robots to package the item. Automated bottle fillers can package liquid products such as water, soups and lotions. These types of fillers can center over bottles with very narrow necks, too. These packaging machines are not only used for filling the packaging, but also to sort, label, code, clean and fill boxes for shipment.
