Drums are cylindrical containers used to store or transport a wide range of materials and goods. They are available in a wide range of standard sizes and materials, which should be selected based on the materials being stored or transported. Durability and multiple use requirements are also factors during storage drum selection, as certain drums are designed for long term storage, while others are built for frequent transportation and use.

Both plastic and metal drums are available; they are engineered to store a variety of chemicals, foodstuffs, industrial materials and waste products. In addition to their material and finish, storage and transport drums are categorized by gallon capacity, lining, head style, diameter and height. Open head drums have a removable lid, which can be locked in place through various locking systems, such as lever-locks and closing ring. They may be equipped with pluggable bung openings or have a completely closed lid; some open head drums cannot be stored horizontally. Closed head drums contain bung openings for filling and emptying, which can be easily plugged after material containment; most closed head drums can be stored horizontally as well as vertically, although it is important to check with the manufacturer before determining storage methods.

Drums are also used for process mixing applications, salvage and spill control. Lightweight fiber and polyethylene drums are effective shipping solutions for a variety of products. Be sure to check the liquid/dry material requirements and carrying capacity before transporting materials. All storage and transport drums may be certified by the USDA, or engineered to meet various specifications and standards, which are required for certain containment applications. Heavy duty drums are typically made from carbon steel or stainless steel, but may include other metals for hazardous chemicals. Polyethylene/steel composites provide both strength and chemical resistance, and are ideal for a wide range of hazardous materials.
