Extruded plastics are used during the process of thermoforming and are produced by the process of extrusion. Extrusion is performed by forcing a base, such as a type of metal, aluminum, plastic or plastic pellets, through a die to achieve a desired shape or configuration. The temperature of the plastic being formed must be compliant. The plastic pellets used during this process are essentially melted and forced to change shape depending on the mold. Manufacturers often use plastics able to withstand a series of heating and cooling cycles, which make them suitable for recycling processes.

Many useful products and chemicals can be added during the process of making extruded plastics. Dye and pigmentation can be used for added color. The plastic sheets are often custom made to order. They can be made in a wide range of colors and textures.

Stabilizers are often used to prevent a change in the physical state of the extruded plastics. Stabilizers also are added to give the product a desired consistency and texture. In addition, this can help reduce brittleness and help protect the plastic from ultraviolet rays when exposed to the outside elements.

Plasticizers, which are chemicals that help to keep the plastic pliable, are also used when producing extruded plastics. This will help reduce brittleness in the final product. Fillers are sometimes used to increase stiffness as well.

When producing extruded plastics, the thermo former must contain the correct additives in order to correctly produce the extruder. Many products are made using this process. Products made using extruded plastics include the common garden hose, hoses used in mechanical devices, PVC pipes, rubber nipples, and a wide variety of tubing. This method can be a good option for companies looking to produce a high quality, but a low cost product. The production of extruded plastics formed by vacuum or thermo formed, is much lower in cost than that of injection molding.
