Foam tape provides a variety of bonding and sealing solutions. Typically double-sided, foam tape is available in a number of high-strength, resilient materials, including acrylic, neoprene, polyethylene and polyurethane foam. Rolls of foam tape should be categorized by their total length and by the width of the tape itself, which will very likely factor in to your use of the tape.

One of foam tape’s main advantages over mechanical fasteners is its ability to withstand a high level of vibration. This makes it an ideal choice for certain construction applications where relatively high-strength, durable seals are needed. An example might be a wood-framed, plywood-covered platform (provided the weight added will not overburden the tape), where foam tape provides the added benefit of eliminating cracks that might result from the use of screws. In an application like this, foam tape also displays another useful quality: sound absorption. The tape will minimize squeaks in the construction, as well as prevent the plywood from clattering against the frame.

In other applications, such as sealing gaps in walls or windows, foam tape provides heat and sound insulation. Foam tape also finds use in cabling and wiring systems, where a few wraps can provide both distance and adhesion between multiple cables. It plays a variety of important roles in the construction of robots, and is useful in robot drive trains and other functions.

Foam tape is manufactured in a number of different shapes, and in roll form. There are also various adhesives used on the tape itself, including rubber and acrylic adhesives, all of which provide different advantages and drawbacks. Acrylic adhesive, for example, provides a durable bond suited to long-term outdoor use. One should take care to inspect adhesives on tape that has sat unused for a long period of time, since unused tape can dry out.
