Generators provide electricity for a comprehensive range of industrial, commercial and residential systems. They can be used as a primary power source, an alternative or supplemental source, or as a back-up source in cases of emergency or power failure. Manufacturers produce a wide variety of generator systems, from gasoline-driven generators to solar-electric units. These devices include sizes ranging from small, portable models to large industrial power supplies capable of powering complete facility operations.
Generators find regular use in a multitude of industries, including mining, medical, film production, military and construction operations. In many cases, particularly in industries that regularly visit new production and labor locations, dependable or effective power sources are unavailable, and high-output portable generators are a necessity. Larger portable generators are typically transported between locations with trucks, trailers or similar vehicles; smaller units generally allow for easier transport. Large, high-output generators primarily use diesel or propane as fuel, and are rated by their fuel consumption, kilowatt output, weight, and maximum fuel capacity. Fuel consumption ratings are also listed for various power output levels, enabling end users to estimate necessary fuel for a variety of operations. Noise levels may also be a concern for some applications, and silenced models are available.
Gas-driven engine-generators use an engine to produce mechanical motion, which is converted into electric current by the system’s generator component. The combination of generator and engine is also known as a genset, and it is among the most common types of generator used in industrial applications. Small, portable gensets are often used to provide power for hand-held power tools and other simple devices, while larger models are capable of providing electricity for an assortment of heavy equipment and complete facility operations. The majority of generators are built to perform below maximum output in order to provide better fuel efficiency.
