Gloves are used for a variety of protective and sanitation purposes, from heat and chemical safety to food preparation applications. They are manufactured in a comprehensive range of materials, including cotton, leather, Kevlar, cloth and latex, and are available in a variety of sizes.
The material type and thickness, as well as glove design, vary based on function. Gloves used in restaurant food preparation, for example, are made from thin, disposable plastic, and are engineered for single or temporary use. Leather gloves used in rigging applications, however, are designed for repeated use, and provide durable, dependable protection from rope burns and similar hazards.
Kevlar gloves are typically used in functions where heat resistance is of primary importance. Kevlar is a synthetic material that offers exceptional heat resistance and minimal heat storage. At extreme temperatures (above 400 degress Celsius), Kevlar, the brand name for the substance poly-paraphenylene terepthalamide, will decompose rather than melt. Gloves fashioned from Kevlar also provide good cut resistance and are suitable for use in various high-temperature applications. Fingerless, lined, extra fine knit and industrial weight models are all available.
A variety of synthetics, such as PVC, Neoprene, Nitrile and rubber, are used for chemical handling and processing. These materials excel in most chemical applications due to their inertness; they will protect the wearer from an extensive range of hazardous substances, including acids, oils and caustics. When using gloves for chemical handling applications, however, users should take care to check for punctures, tears and cuts, as even the slightest hole can lead to potential problems.
Gloves are manufactured in a multitude of styles, from unsupported (single layer) hand guards to cotton lined models with full arm protection sleeves. Certain sets are designed with elastic wrist guards to provide a snugger fit, while others may include a tightening strap or a flared wrist protector.
