Hand tools include traditional instruments like hammers, saws, screwdrivers and pliers, as well as an assortment of more specialized devices, such as torque wrenches, tube benders and connector release tools. Many specialized hand tools are designed for use with specific parts or products, and are not effective for general applications. Traditional tools, on the other hand, afford a wide variety of uses, but may not be properly suited to select tasks. The determining characteristic of all hand tools, however, is that it they are hand operated and powered by the strength of the user.
Advances in certain chemical and manufacturing processes have made a wide range of precision, high-strength hand tools accessible to the general public. Tool kits and hand tools featuring interchangeable parts provide an incredible amount of tooling capabilities for a minimal cost. In addition, the continuing trend toward standardization has further enhanced the effectiveness of general tools. However, many applications, such as automobile and motorcycle repair, electronics and telecommunications, require highly specialized tools to interface properly with different fasteners and other components. These tools are generally categorized by the system or mechanism with which they are meant to be used, such as intake manifold wrenches, oil drain plug wrenches and spark plug rethreaders. The majority of traditional hand tools see such wide usage that they need little explanation; there are, however, a number of considerations one should make when selecting tools. First, potential buyers should consider whether the potential applications are more suited to a power tool, which have become cost efficient even to casual users. Next, the quality and strength of the tools should be taken into account. Corrosion-resistant, rustproof materials are important when looking for tools meant to be used for prolonged periods of time; likewise, high strength material is an integral characteristic of tools that will receive regular use in high-stress applications. Lastly, one should evaluate the range of the tool in question; for dedicated applications, a single purpose tool may be the best choice, but for general use, one may prefer a hand tool with multiple options.
