Hydraulic cylinders are used in many items, including heavy machinery, gym equipment, boats, and even wheelchair lifts and mobile device lifts. Hydraulic cylinders have one end with a closed head, called the piston. The piston moves up and down, or back and forth (sideways), inside the cylinder chamber, driven by fluid pressure. A car engine uses a different force to accomplish a similar piston motion. The popularity of hydraulic cylinders is likely due to the large amounts of power that can be transferred through tiny tubes and hoses using hydraulic cylinders.

Hydraulic cylinders are used in heavy machinery because of their ability to use so much power in operation, while using such small components. Hydraulic cylinders make it possible for heavy machine operators, like crane and forklift operators, to connect the control valves, using pipes, so the controls can be placed further away. Also, using hydraulic cylinders makes it possible to expand equipment usage. It is very possible to add to the number of hydraulic actuators by installing optional devices to the main system.

Not only do hydraulic cylinders aid in insuring our heavy machinery functions to their utmost ability, they can also be found in wheelchair lifts and other helpful devices. Hydraulic cylinders help the wheelchair lifts to hold the weight of the wheelchair and its occupant. Using a hydraulic wheelchair lift broadens the occupant's range of mobility by lifting them and lowering them from high porches, vans, buses, and many other hard to maneuver places; they are also dependable, and they lift and lower passengers through slow and smooth motion.

Hydraulic cylinders are used to improve the abilities of many items, including heavy machinery, gym equipment, boats and wheelchair lifts. Hydraulic cylinders are used more and more because of their ability to create such high power levels, which are transferred through small tubes and hoses.
