Labels are the most useful tool for organizing and creating a successful workspace. Nothing wastes more time than misplaced, misfiled, misapplied, or mislabeled tools, parts, or papers. Of course, proper organization is not the only reason for using labels; another reason, just as important as the foregoing, is safety. Chemicals especially need to be clearly labeled to avoid the accidental ingestion of poisons, the improper mixing of incompatible substances, and damage to a host of surfaces that can occur if certain liquids are brought in contact with them.

These days, labels are plentiful on the market, and many warehouses and small shops are able to purchase labels that are applicable to even the most highly specialized trade. In addition to the forementioned, a wide variety of software applications now allow for the customization of labels to make them fit even the most unusual purpose.

Inventories are bound to stay efficiently organized through the application of a color coding system, especially if many like parts are stored in close proximity, and the accidental mixing of the parts is a possibility. For safety procedures, training materials and other reference papers can be collected in easily accessible binders organized with properly labeled dividers and transparent sheet covers to prevent any damage to the original documents.

Computer CDs also may be stored in specially designed binders. These CDs can be custom labeled to display a company logo, or a standard label can be applied. This system of proper labeling will not only increase productivity, but will also enhance the image a company or warehouse presents to its customers. After all, a well-stocked warehouse where information on inventories, orders, and shipments is at the fingertips of the clerk is a lot more likely to impress potential customers than a clerk who is unsure of available items, unable to find shipment information, and unskilled at some of the more advanced warehouse procedures for lack of proper reference materials.
