Mats provide a variety of temporary and semi-permanent flooring options for a wide range of industrial, commercial and domestic areas. They may be used for numerous functions, from decorative and sanitary purposes to drainage and spill control functions. Although often used to protect permanent surfaces from damage and wear, mats also serve a number of essential roles in industrial and technological facilities.

In facilities using floor-based electronic equipment, grounding mats reduce the transmission of static electricity, which can be hazardous to personnel and equipment. Proper accessories, including all grounding attachments, must be employed for full effectiveness. Rubber and synthetic mats may also provide traction on a slippery or slick surface, thereby adding to personnel safety and workspace efficiency. Drainage mats allow users to keep a sturdy, mostly dry surface while excess liquid quickly flows through the mat treads to the surface below. In some cases, especially for more permanent applications, metal grating may be preferred; mats, however, can be removed for cleaning or replaced, and may offer superior traction to metal grating.

Offices and other professional facilities use a variety of mats, whether to enhance chair movement or prevent carpet wear in highly trafficked hallways and entryways. These mats can be fabricated from synthetics, textiles, or a combination of the two. Carpet mats offer a non-slip synthetic base and an attractive, comfortable scraping surface. This type of flooring is ideal for entryways similar areas, and is available in a wide range of sizes and materials (including vinyl and polypropylene). For industrial areas and other well trafficked locations, heavy duty mats may be a more economical and practical solution. These mats are weather resistant and provide a slip-resistant surface even when wet. Certain facilities may even require acoustical control mats to dampen or eliminate various sound frequencies and noises. These mats typically use a foam core to dampen vibrations, while another material provides a wear resistant coating.
