Nameplates have been incorporatied into many home applications, as well as a public and industrial uses. We can find them attached to the doors of high-ranking company officers. They may be found on doors to advise customers which to use as an entrance, and which door is the designated exit. Sometimes they point the way to the restrooms, while other times they designate the location of the nearest fire extinguisher. Nameplates are also found on cars, where they denote the model of car. On older locomotives they may be found as a proper name for the engine, usually in honor of a head of state. Ships also may display nameplates, as do some fire engines.

Nameplates are manufactured in a variety of ways to suit the customers’ needs. Their finishes, patterns, and textures depend on the uses and the customers’ specifications, while shapes may be either complex to highlight the unique nature of the business, or simple, to allow for functionality. Mounting options vary as well: some use adhesives while others have predrilled holes to allow for more permanent installation via a set of screws. Many plates are made of metal, yet plates manufactured from polystyrene and polycarbonate are gaining popularity.

Nameplates have also found use in children’s rooms, nurseries, and schools, where laminated paper is used to prepare temporary nameplates that are easily removed at the end of a semester, school year, or at graduation. Other materials that are may be used for the manufacturing of such plates also include treated woods, and aluminum. Uses also vary from nameplates that display proper names to plates that are used to display barcodes. A different niche that has come to life in the wake of antiquated and retired plates is the collectors’ market for locomotive and automotive nameplates.
