When you receive a package, whether from a relative or shipping company, it is often filled with packaging materials. When virtually any fragile or important object is sent somewhere, some sort of packaging materials must be used to protect it. So what are the options? In a basic sense, a wide range of items can be used for packaging materials, although specialized products call for more specialized packaging material.

In the earlier years of mailing and shipping anything soft and available was used as packaging materials. For instance, many products might arrive surrounded in straw. Straw was a popular and inexpensive packaging material. In the past, peanuts were even used as packaging materials. Even today, peanuts are used as a fun edible packaging material for care packages to college students or overseas military personnel.

Today, ideal packaging materials are still those that are soft and inexpensive. When possible, it is also a bonus that will save your money if the packaging materials being used are the waste product of another process. For instance, often times saw dust, wood chips, or wood shavings may be used as packaging materials. Another option is to use shredded newspaper or shredded documents from an office.

Lastly, packaging materials may certainly be manufactured. This process is worthwhile when the manufacturing of the packaging materials is inexpensive. This is the case with both bubble wrap and Styrofoam peanuts. Both are soft and both may be manufactured inexpensively and in massive amounts. In addition, many companies choose to save these packaging materials and recycle them themselves. For instance, a company may receive hundreds of boxes of an item surrounded by Styrofoam packing. That company may save them and use the same packaging materials when they ship packages back out. Either way, recycling is big in the packaging materials business.
