Used in the bulk of storage applications, pallet racks are a mainstay of warehouses and factories around the world. They are, therefore, available in a complete range of sizes and materials. In general, they consist of bolted or welded metal columns and a series of metal shelves. Other materials, such as wood and plastic, are also used.

When considering a pallet racking system, you first need to determine the weight and size of the objects to be stored. Next, calculate the available storage space, and determine the range of affordable acquisition costs for your storage system. You should also evaluate the potential need for expansion, the frequency with which the stored objects will be moved, the stacking methods used, as well as the possibility that the racks will need to be rearranged. A 500-pound heavy duty drum pallet rack is not the ideal solution for a situation that only requires the storage of 20-pound cardboard boxes.

If you see a potential for expansion, stackable pallet racks are an excellent solution to eventual storage issues. The majority of standard racks can be stacked, provided you buy the proper starter units—you can then add additional storage as needed. If you foresee high traffic in your storage space, a durable, wear-resistant material, such as welded, galvanized steel, is a good choice. On the other hand, a storage facility that is used for a wide variety of materials and components would greatly benefit from an adjustable rack system that allows for the storage of objects of different sizes. Portable racks are ideal for warehouses and factories that encounter regular need to move storage between locations.

The nature of handling procedures also plays an integral role in the selection of a pallet racking system. Drive-in storage, accessible by forklifts or other transport vehicles, necessitates certain storage systems and spacing designs. By contrast, certain storage systems necessitate the use of specific loaders. A 40-foot tall pallet rack, for instance, requires a means to load and unload 40-foot shelves. Inventory methods and automation concerns should also factor into your choice.
