Pipe fittings are available in all shapes, sizes, and made from a variety of materials best suited to meet individual needs. Pipe fittings are designed to attach two pieces of pipe together, the proper way. Using the proper pipe fittings, there will be no leaks or drops in pressure when the installation of the pipes is complete.

In order to insure pipe fittings are installed properly, there are a few basic rules that should be followed. Pipe fittings should always be cleaned with a wire brush, on their inside and outside surfaces, before installation. Sometimes a solvent cleaner will need to be used on the pipe fittings before the pipes are inserted into them. After installation of the pipes into the pipe fittings is complete, a glue or cement is often used, so that the pipe fittings can maintain the pressure of whatever is running through them. Depending on the job the pipe fittings are expected to do, the glue or cement is sometimes applied before the pipes are inserted into the pipe fittings, on both the pipes and on the pipe fittings alike. Primer products are also available, which prepare the pipes and the pipe fittings for the gluing or cementing process of the installation. And if you are working with copper pipes and pipe fittings, you may need to heat the pipes before gluing, cementing, or installing them into the pipe fittings. Be sure to wear protective goggles when heating copper pipes or pipe fittings.

Pipes and pipe fittings come in every shape and size you can imagine, and are made from a variety of different materials. This is because pipes and pipe fittings are used to carry many different elements, from water to gases. Using proper pipe fittings will help to insure none of the elements escape the pipes or pipe fittings, and no pressure is lost.
