Although exactly when recycled plastic bottles came about is not known, in today's society, many people recycle their plastic bottles to conserve energy and the environment, among many other positive reasons. This article will take a brief look at a simple process of creating new products from recycled plastic from used plastic bottles.

Before plastic bottles can be recycled, they must be collected and removed from wastes, such as garbage receptacles and waste dumping areas. There are two common types of collection of plastic bottles to be recycled, curbside collection and drop off centers. Curbside collection is when you place your empty plastic bottles in a container at your curbside, and someone will pick them up for you, usually once a month, to take them to have them recycled. At drop off centers, you can drop your empty plastic bottles to be recycled, and in some state you will be compensated monetarily for you donation of plastic bottles to be recycled. After collection, in some circumstances, the plastic bottles will have to be sorted before recycling. This is necessary when plastic bottles have been collected with other recycled material, such as aluminum, or glass.

Next, the sorted plastic bottles go to the plastic processor, where the plastic bottles are converted into plastic pellets or flakes that are then used to manufacture new plastic products. These flakes or pellets are created by feeding plastic bottles into the granulator, where they are shredded into uniform sized chips of plastic. Once the plastic bottles are in flake or pellet formation, they can then be sold to manufactures to be made into new plastic bottles or new plastic products.

In today's society many people use recycling to dispose of their empty plastic bottles. In some states, there are small refunds available for recycling plastic bottles. Nevertheless, recycling plastic bottles saves energy, and has many other benefits to our society.
