Plastic fabrication is an integral aspect of the plastics industry and has been around for many years. Plastic fabricators are trades people who are skilled in working with plastics and can do an assortment of different jobs. Some of the jobs plastic fabricators are called upon to do include welding, bending, forming, cutting and drilling of plastic material and installation.
The process of plastic fabrication includes such tasks as testing all new types of plastic, acquiring equipment for the processing of plastic that is considered at the top of its game (or state-of-the-art), engineering, manufacturing and finding suitable placement for plastic commodities in the international sphere of markets.
The machines of choice that are utilized in the fabricating of plastics include routers (air, electric and pin) as well as CNC machinery. These machines are used not only in the area of plastic fabrication but also in other areas which include, but are not limited to, blow molding, rotational molding, sheet fabrication and thermoforming.
To take a closer look at the three types of routers, they are all categorized as hand fed applications and are in contrast to the applications of CNC machinery. The hand fed applications only work as good as the plastic fabricators who run them. It is important with these applications to be careful what tooling method is chosen. The best materials to use are high-speed carbide that has steel shanks as their tips. Solid carbide works the best with hand fed applications as opposed to using with CNC (which requires a more controlled, monitored environment).
The air router is used very often in these hand fed applications and includes a guard, guide bushing and a support bearing or nose. The length of the router is of utmost importance as well. It is necessary that the collet part of it bottoms out and the router length must extent well beyond the guide bushing but still be able to make contact with the work material. Tolerance level is an important part of the air router applications, especially when it comes to the incorporation of tooling.
