A storage tank or container that is designed for operation at pressures above 15 psig are in general, called pressure vessels. These present many safety hazards and should be handled with care and caution.

Recently, safety organizations have discovered during inspections that there are a number of pressure vessels that are cracked and damaged in workplaces. When pressure vessels have cracks or damage, they become unsafe. The cracks or damage may result in leakage or rupture failures. Failure, when dealing with pressure vessels and such high psig, can present major safety issues.

There are a number of health and safety hazards that pressure vessels with cracks or damage may present. The potential dangerous results of leaking pressure vessels include suffocations, poisonings, fires, and even explosion. Rupture failures, which may result from leaking pressure vessels, may be even more catastrophic. Such failures may cause large amounts of damage to property and staff.

To prevent damage and catastrophe in the use of pressure vessels, precautions must be taken. Safe design, operation and maintenance, and installation in accordance with standards and codes, are absolutely necessary to protect workers’ health and safety, and property.

There is really no one standard for pressure vessels, but some safety organization standards, to require that they be built in accordance with the codes and standards of the industry. For flammable and combustible liquids, the requirement is that the pressure vessels must be built to adhere to the Code for Unfired Pressure Vessels.

Pressure vessels are a necessary tool in storage of certain liquids and gasses. However, there is a danger of injury or damage in any situation in which high pressure is a factor. Therefore, safety in both the making and usage of pressure vessels is extremely important. Proper knowledge of local and federal mandates for pressure vessels can go a long way in ensuring the safety of everyone involved with them.
