Scales are used for a variety of measuring functions, but the term is typically used to describe weighing devices. The traditional scale most may envision—that of a pair of counterbalanced, suspended pans—is a weighing device, although it actually measures mass rather than weight (a function of gravity). However, while all similar balances measure mass, most industrial scales are simply used to calculate weight.
Scales perform this task in through a multitude of methods. Hanging scales, for example, calculate the force pulling down on an internal component, typically a compression spring. Other scales use a combination of power-driven sensors to calculate the amount of weight pushing down on them. Some devices even use piezoelectric crystals to determine the proper measurement. In many modern scales, the measurements of the scale are converted to a digital representation, which can be tailored to virtually any system.
Included among the many scales available are miniature scales, floor scales, bench scales and spring scales. Floor scales are useful for measuring cargo, waste or other similar items, while spring scales provide a fair degree of accuracy for a relatively low cost. Miniature scales provide a portable precision instrument for smaller loads, and bench scales answer the needs of many industries, and of normal consumers. Extremely heavy machinery and materials may require the use of a hydraulic or pneumatic scale for proper measurement. Truck weighing stations typically make use of piezoelectric load cells in weighing operations.
Proper calibration may be the single most important attribute of any given scale, for once a device is properly calibrated, standard error ranges can be factored into weight measurements. These ranges, however, mean little if a scale cannot provide dependable accuracy. The materials used in the scale’s manufacture play a role in the scale’s performance, as well as its durability. Various plastics, rubbers and metals, especially stainless steel, are all used in the manufacture of industrial scales.
