Chromium is actually the metal behind stainless steel. If a certain amount of chromium is added to steel, it will qualify as stainless steel. One of the best benefits to having stainless steel is that it is so resistant to corrosive action, this is because of the thin protective coating it has from its chromium content. The use of this metal has become a necessity for systems, especially the medical industries. Stainless steel parts and products can be found in cars, airplanes, appliances, kitchens, and factories. Depending on the purpose of the steel, various amounts of nickel, and other metals are used. The steel is often made to be non-heat-treatable or heat-treatable. Various widths, thicknesses and hardness levels are also used. These combinations determine the grade, quality, durability and prices of the steel.

Stainless steel can actually be recycled. Often referred to as scrap metal, stainless steel will experience many lives. Austenitic stainless steel is used for many household products and reacts well to various temperatures. This same steel will end up in buildings and other structures. Ferritic steel is used for some indoor structures and washing machines. Austenitic and ferritic steels can be combined into a duplex and be used for the paper and pulp industries. Martensitic steel is very hard and makes a good knife or blade. Stainless steel also comes in a variety of categories including, rebar, flat hot rolled and flat cold rolled. The metal will also go through a variety of processes in order to become what the client needs. Companies which offer stainless steel will often provide cutting of the steel to various shapes, waterjet cutting, shearing, brake press bending and tube bending.

At least 100 combinations of stainless steel are being used by different industries. A company may use strip, coiled, ring, plate or strip steel. This combination metal is cherished because of its ability to resist staining. It is also non-porous and simple to clean. Stainless steel is applauded in the household for its benign relationship to food, in that it will not affect the taste of food and for its ability to last for decades.
