To create a prototype or specific metal piece, the process of stamping can be used. This requires precision, detail and high quality stamping devices. Metal and other material stamping is used for a variety of industries. Aluminum, mylar, kapton, cold rolled and spring steel are some of the materials which are often stamped. From coins, hardware, aerospace, and gun metal to automotive parts, stampings are used to make large numbers of defined pieces and parts. Stamping is also referred to as blanking or punching. Factories and companies offering stamping will place the material to be stamped between die sections. Pressure and force shape and shear the material into numerous shapes and products.

Stampings can be performed for short or long runs. Machines can be programmed or computer numerically controlled (CNC) to offer perfection for each stamped piece. Electrical discharge machining (EDM) and computer aided design (CAD) programs ensure that accurate blueprints of products and prototypes can be offered. Various tooling machines for the dies used in the stampings are offered. Progressive, forming, compound and carbide tooling perform specific stamping needs. Progressive dies can be used to create multiple pieces on a single piece simultaneously.

Materials which are tiny or weighing in the tons can be made into stampings. Certain devices can provide stamping on four sides. Post stamping production includes the stamped product going through deburring, tapping, reaming and counterboring processes. These allow for other parts to be added to a stamped piece or for imperfections to be smoothed over to create a perfect piece. The use of lasers and waterjet cutting, combined with CNC, CAD/CAM and EDM programs, allow for the elimination of some tooling processes. One will find stamped products in on everyday items like coins as well as the items we pay less attention to like washers, nuts and bolts.
