Drum Liners Buying Guide

An Overview of Drum liners

Drum liners are typically constructed from FDA approved polyethylene, and are designed to fit in either steel or plastic drums of various sizes. Available in multiple widths, liners help minimize drum cleaning and replacement (reducing waste) and prevent product contamination. They are used for storing and shipping a variety of materials, such as liquid and raw products, and can hold from a few gallons to over 50 gallons. Drum liners are available in various types, including round bottom, flat bottom, rigid and semi-rigid variations. These liners are often custom manufactured in various designs, with some featuring an anti-static composition.

Typical Applications & Purposes

Drum liners are applied to drums for a variety of purposes, such as storage, shipment and mixing various types of products, including:

  • Chemicals and flammables;
  • Adhesives, i.e., pastes;
  • Inks and coatings;
  • Food products, including greases and oils; and
  • Cosmetic materials, i.e., nail polish.


Materials and Designs

Polyethylene, a thermoplastic, is used to fabricate drum liners. The material is efficient for a number of applications because of its versatility, tensile strength and high resistance to tears. While numerous drum liners are constructed of high-density polyethylene, the most common composition is a low-density composition. Polyethylene material can be compounded with an anti-static formula, and are sometimes used as conductive liners for flammable materials. Polyethylene liners are environmentally friendly products, as they are recyclable.

Anti-static liners: These types of liners function by eliminating static charges and are capable of holding hot-fill materials and products up to 300 degrees Fahrenheit. Anti-static liners are commonly used for holding chemical waste.

Flat bottom: These liners or bags are inserted into the drum, and are suitable for containing materials and minimizing waste removal time. Typically, flat liners are the most cost-effective option in the drum liner selection, though careful placement is necessary as these liners may create air pockets due to their straight seam.

Round bottom: Round bottom liners have a cylindrical bottom that conforms to the drum base, creating minimal or no space gaps between the liner and the drum, in contrast to flat bottom liners, which may develop air spaces. Round bottom liners are ideal for a swift and easy removal, and are typically compatible for both dry and liquid products, and are commonly used with pumps.

Rigid and Semi-rigid:These liners are similar to theround bottom liner version, but are fabricated in a thicker polyethylene material and are often constructed without any seams. They are made of both high-density and low-density polyethylene and have a rugged texture in comparison to thin films.

Additional Considerations

Experts advise consultingwith the manufacturer to confirm that the polyethylene material liner meets the standard FDA requirements. As with all processes, it is essential to consult with the manufacturing company to ensure that the correct material is used for the correct apparatus. In addition to the types of liners mentioned above, drum liners may be custom made for specific applications: for example, liners with pleats or accordion textures are also available for various drum types.
