Model 24
  • The pneumatic lift version of the Model 24 is based on the open face machine, but has the pressure weights attached to the rods of three pneumatic cylinders. Self aligning bearings accommodate any slight vertical misalignment and ensure an even pressure is applied to components inside the conditioning ring.
  • The Model 24 diamond flat lapping/polishing machine is a popular choice for lapping of mechanical seal faces and a variety of valve components, eg : pressure relief valve bodies and caps, and parallel slide valves, both in original manufacture and in maintenance and repair workshops.
Model 36
  • The pneumatic lift version of the Lapmaster Model 36 is based on the Open Face design, but the pressure weights are attached, through selfaligning bearings, to the rods of three pneumatic cylinders. These are mounted vertically on sliding rails within a fabricated hollow assembly, known as a “spider bar”. This fabrication is cantilevered over the lap plate and is mounted onto a tubular upright column bolted to the machine frame. The free end is restrained by a tierod to prevent excessive bending stress when high lapping pressures are used.
  • The primary function of the pneumatic arrangement is to permit loading and unloading to be carried out without the need to lift pressure weights manually. However they can be used to supply additional loading to the components within the conditioning ring should this be required.
  • Operator safety is a primary concern in the design. Movement of each pressure weight up or down is controlled by a two hand anti-tie down control system. This arrangement requires the use of both hands on two separate buttons to function and ensures that the operator cannot injure his hands or arms when lowering the weights.
  • A further safety feature is that the pressure weights are mechanically latched when in the fully raised position so that, should the compressed air supply or electrical power fail, they will not fall.
  • The machine is intended for use with free abrasive slurries - abrasive grit suspended in an oil-based or water based vehicle. A diamond slurry dispensing system can also be fitted if required.
  • Flatness of the lap plate, and consequently of the work, is controlled by adjusting the position of the three conditioning rings relative to the lap plate track. The pneumatic cylinders and pressure weights are also capable of the corresponding adjustment.
  • This machine is also available in Open Face version.
Model 48
  • The Lapmaster Model 48 machine features rugged construction, and is equipped with a 48 inch (1219 mm) diameter cast iron lap plate.
  • The lap plate is made up of individual segments bolted to a cast iron support plate. These segments are massive enough to provide long life in high production environments, even with multi-shift operation. the surrounding work table can be simply adjusted as the lap plate wears, so that the sharp edge is never exposed.
  • The lap plate drive system uses a separate motor and worm and wheel mechanical reduction gear box with multi-belt drive, and is mounted in a floor standing base.
  • This is a fabricated steel channel framework with removable panels for ease of access during maintenance.
  • The drive system incorporates as standard an electronic soft start which will smoothly accelerate the lap plate from stand still to full speed over a controlled time period. This is preset, though it can be adjusted if required, to suit particular process conditions.
  • The machine uses a free abrasive slurry, which is supplied from a separate free standing reservoir, equipped with a pump and driven agitator. A diamond slurry dispensing system can also be fitted if required. Outlets are provided to feed each conditioning ring via a track wire, with individual control valves. This system is designed so that a circulatory flow is established. The pump is capable of delivering far more slurry to the outlets than is necessary.
  • The excess is returned to the reservoir via a sloping drain tube. This together with the constant agitations provided by the stirrer minimizes the tendency of the abrasive grains to settle out in the vehicle.
  • This machine is also available in a pneumatic lift version.
DFL Systems
Dual Face Precision Flat Surfacing Machines
  • The Lapmaster DFL line of dual face lapping/polishing/fine grinding machines is based upon a 3-way planetary concept designed to yield precise and repeatable results at an economical price. Excellent results are obtained in the processing of a wide range of materials and components including glass, ceramics, crystals, and ferrous materials.
  • The Lapmaster DFL series of dual face flat surfacing machines is a versatile unique solution for solving critical tolerance issues on parts requiring :
    • Excellent flatness Capabilities : < I micron
    • Part to Part Size Variance : < 4 microns
    • Parallelism : < 3 microns
    • Surface Finish : < 0.25 mm Ra
    • Typical Material Removal : 0.6 mm
  • Lapmaster DFL machines are built in modular fashion, capable of dual face fine grinding, lapping or polishing. Equipped with three independent drives, a standard programmable controller storing up to 100 routines, a servo motor and ball screw down pressure system and pressure controlling load cell, the DFL series of machines incorporates complete, simple, repeatable and accurate process controls.
Model 72
The Model 72 machine is, as with all the other machines in the series, of the ring lapping type, but its design is different because of its larger size.
  • Unlike the others, which have a panel clad body, the Model 72 uses a cruciform shaped structural steel base. The mechanical reduction gearbox is mounted at the centre of the base, with the drive motor to one side. Drive is transmitted via multiple vee belts, and the moving parts of the system are enclosed within a mesh guard. At the end of each arm of the cross are mounted hollow section upright columns.
  • These support the trough surrounding the lap plate and provide the mounting point for each of the four roller yokes. The cast iron serrated lap plate is made up of sixteen individual segments, which are bolted to the support plate. This is a single casting which is located on a tapered cone fitted to the output shaft of the reduction gearbox.
  • The drive system incorporates, as standard, an electronic soft startwhich will smoothly accelerate the lap plate from standstill to full speed, 36 rpm, over a controlled time period. This is a preset, though it can be adjusted if required to suit particular process conditions.
  • The machine uses a free abrasive slurr y, which is supplied from a separate freestanding reservoir, equipped with a pump and driven blade stirrer. Outlets are provided to feel each conditioning ring via a track wire, with individual control valves. A diamond slurr y dispensing system can also be fitted if required.
  • As with all ring lapping machines flatness of the lap plate can be altered by wear conditioning, that is the lateral position of the conditioning rings relative to the lap plate track can be adjusted to preferentially wear the plate’s surface. For example, if the lap plate is concave then the conditioning rings are moved outboard, so that the area around the outer edge of the lap plate is worn down faster the the area near the centre, gradually improving the flatness of the plate.
  • As this machine has no worktable, the roller yokes can be adjusted vertically as well as laterally, so that the normal wearing of the plate during prolonged usage can be accommodated.
  • This machine is also available in Pneumatic Lift version, see Product Data Sheet.
Model 84
The Lapmaster Model 84 machine for standard duty applications is equipped with four work stations.
  • The machine includes a fabricated base assembly with segment support plate, splash trough and four equally spaced pillars. The four roller yokes and splash trough are mounted off pillars. The yokes can be positioned independently inboard or outboard for conditioning ring placement required to maintain a flat lap plate. The four conditioning rings are driven by the friction of the rotating lap plate and guided on the O.D. by the yokes and bearing assemblies.
  • A thirty gallon capacity floor standing slurry tank and pump assembly is included. The abrasive distribution system will have the continuous agitation feature which permits the pump to keep running after the lap plate times out. This insures that the abrasive is kept in proper suspension at all times even between lap cycles. Also included, is a four feed slurr y distribution feature which supplies a regulated flow of abrasive and vehicle equally to all four work stations on the lap plate.
  • Automatic timing device to permit setting a pre-determined lapping cycle for machine operation.
  • Non-hardened cast alloy segmental lapping plate 84” in diameter approximately 5” think. Also, four 35” O.D. x 32” I.D. 7” high non-hardened cast alloy conditioning ring assemblies with serrated and lapped conditioning surfaces.
  • One (1) Main Drive Motor, 40 H.P., 230/460 Volt, 60 cycle, 3 phase.
  • Special high torque gear reducer.
  • Electrical controls, 110 volt, single phase, 60 cycles actuated through a transformer for operation on 230 or 460 volts. Wired to National Electrical Code Standards unless otherwise specified.
  • Equipped with a power factor controller for energy conservation. Attachment automatically adjusts the drive motor voltage to meet the load requirements while maintaining full motor speed and torque availability. Also provides smooth, stepless acceleration through the gear reducer, reduces motor operating temperatures and eliminates sudden, high torque start up.
  • As an option, this machine can be equipped with a bridging support and pneumatic lift mechanism to raise and lower the concentrically grooved pressure plates and to provide additional down pressure. This equipment consists of an air cylinder mounted on each of the four stations. Each cylinder is individually controlled.
  • Four (4) micarta workholder blanks. 32” diameter x 1/2” thick.
