Water purification technologist Aquatech, based in Canonsburg, Pa., has won a contract with the Egyptian Ethylene and Derivatives Co. (ETHYDCO) to provide a water treatment facility that includes Egypt’s first zero liquid discharge (ZLD) plant.
The ZLD plant in Alexandria, Egypt, will be installed as part of ETHYDCO’s ethylene and petroleum derivatives manufacturing site. The Aquatech plant will treat wastewater and cooling tower blowdown to get cooling tower makeup water, boiler feed water, and achieve ZLD. The project is expected to be completed in 13 months.
The feed water will be a composite mix of treated effluent and water from the Nile River canal, whose inconsistent water chemistry throughout the year requires treatment. Aquatech’s water treatment technology consists of a high-efficiency reverse osmosis microfiltration system tradenamed HERO, followed by fractional electrodeionization (tradenamed FEDI) and brine collection, a crystallizer, and a sludge treatment system.
