Water Equipment and Consumables Market for Power Plants to Top $20 Billion

The water process equipment market among power plants worldwide will total $21 billion in 2014. McIlvaine Co., the specialty research company, forecasts traditional (fossil fuel-based), nuclear, wind, and solar power plant operators to spend this amount for hardware and consumables to move, treat, and monitor water. These include expenditures of $8 billion for valves, $4 billion for pumps, and $5 billion for water/wastewater process chemicals.

Coal-fired power plant operators in East Asia will drive the majority of hardware spend and one-fifth of all consumables spend, which will involve chemicals and filtration equipment, according to McIlvaine. Nuclear, gas, turbine, and coal-fired power plants use massive amounts of water for cooling, as well as for scrubbers and the steam cycle.

Treatment equipment spend will be driven by process areas including wastewater from the scrubber, fly ash transport, and cooling water blowdown. Demand for water/wastewater technology will also be propelled by the movement toward zero liquid discharge plants, which, in turn, is being driven by environmental regulations.
