Xylem Inc. has established a cooperation agreement with the technological development arm of Israel’s Mekorot water utility to evaluate new water technologies and accelerate them into commercialization. Xylem and WaTech will jointly assess emerging technologies related to water quality and security, optimization of water supply, and sustainable water and wastewater treatment and reuse.
“Our partnership with Xylem marks a new era in our mutual advancement in development global state-of-the-art water sector products,” said Simon Ben-Hamo, CEO of Mekorot, based in Tel Aviv.
The agreement allows Xylem to test new products at Mekorot facilities to gauge product viability. According to the company’s website, Mekorot supplies 80 percent of Israel’s drinking water and 70 percent of the nation’s water supply through 3,000 installations in the country. Its Central Filtration Plant produces 500 million cu-m of water each year, while it’s Dan Region Wastewater Treatment Plant treats 130 million cu-m of wastewater annually.
WaTech, for Water Technologies Entrepreneurship Center, is a program that supports technology development that is aligned with Mekorot’s business goals. It offers early-stage entrepreneurs alpha- and beta-site platforms, technology analysis and support, and assistance with capital and development partners. It aims to attract entrepreneurs, start-ups, mature companies (e.g., Xylem), academic institutions, investors, and venture capital companies.
WaTech defines four areas of operation: business ventures and collaborations, applied research, intellectual property development and patenting, and information management. Mekorot has a self-proclaimed “open call” for joint development partners for 2014 in the areas of water quality/safety/protection, wastewater treatment and effluent reclamation, water desalination and membrane systems, and engineering services.
Xylem, based in White Plains, N.Y., is the diversified parent company of a slew of leading pump, instrumentation, and water/wastewater filtration/treatment suppliers, including Goulds, Jabsco, and ebro.
