The Medical Design and Manufacturing (MD&M) West show, Feb. 12-14, will play host to a wide variety of new precision machine tools and components designed for the medical industry.
GF AgieCharmilles will introduce to North America its MIKRON HSM 200U linear performance milling machine in both 3- and 5-axis versions. The MIKRON HSM is designed to machine highly complex medical components like implants and electrodes that require high-precision techniques; the unit is also well-suited for non-medical complex components, such as watch gears.
The unit uses linear motor technology and direct-drive motors to perform 5-axis high-speed machining. The 11.4-hp MIKRON spindle operates as high as 50,000 rpm for accurate surface finish; the company claims surface finish tolerances as tight as roughness average (Ra) of 0.05 micrometers.
The MIKRON is designed with a number of important plant specs in mind, including a small footprint to avoid factory impact and a sophisticated thermal management system. Multiple cooling units installed throughout the center on each linear axis cools the entire machine with a much more even distribution. The MIKRON HSM 200U is also designed for continuous operation, allowing operators to load pallets while machining is still in progress.
The center employs a Heidenhain iTNC 530 control system for advanced levels of monitoring, including “smart machine modules.” These allow operators to monitor machine tool progress and status on a mobile device such as a cell phone, with information on spindle vibration, machine geometry calibration and process status reports available at the touch of a button.
