The developers of the GibbsCAM software for NC and CNC machine programming today announced the introduction of GibbsCAM Student Edition and a new online Student Store to support education in design programming.
Gibbs and Associates said GibbsCAM Student Edition will complement a classroom edition of the software, already available to qualified education institutions. This allows individuals enrolled in design programs to use GibbsCAM software on their own devices after class lets out.
The GibbsCAM software supports 2- through 4-axis machining for milling, turning, wire EDM and other operations and is compatible with a number of CAD formats. The software has plug-in functionality with other widely used software such as Autodesk and SolidWorks.
GibbsCAM Classroom Edition is a teaching program that allows students to familiarize themselves with NC programming standards and practices. Operating on home desktop and laptop PCs, the software features solid modeling, 3-D milling pathing and turning operations as well as machine tool simulation. The student edition is fully compatible with the classroom edition and is available for a yearlong license at $100.
“The introduction of GibbsCAM Student Edition addresses the growing need and pent-up student demand for GibbsCAM licenses that can be used outside the classroom,” Robb Weinstein, Gibbs and Associates’s senior vice president of sales and strategic planning, said in a statement. “[T]he Student Edition augments classroom instruction and helps educational facilities better prepare their students for industry.”
