Kennametal’s new Beyond Shield clamps are designed to reduce chip wear during cast iron machining operations.
The Beyond Shield clamping system is compatible with advanced hard-turning cutting tools composed of polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN), which are used in the automotive and other industries to cut abrasive materials. Beyond Shield can function under cast iron machining conditions, including high pressure, high torque, and high thermal forces. The clamp system resists these forces, as well as chip bombardment, which can often cut down on tool life.
“For customers machining gray cast iron brake disks and brake drums, Kennametal’s Beyond Shield PCBN inserts and clamping system provide up to 20 percent reduced tooling cost and up to 30 percent longer tool life compared to conventional systems,” said Raouf Ben Amor, senior global product manager for Kennametal. “Beyond Shield provides a robust clamping system that allows smaller IC PCBN inserts to perform well in the same applications as the larger IC insert, and by excellent matchup of wear and toughness in our grade properties proven in field tests.”
