[VIDEO] 3D 5-Axis Machining Creates Impressive Unibody Helmet

For its 50th anniversary, Japanese turning and milling technology manufacturer Daishin Seiki decided to show off the capabilities of its 3D machining automation with a tricky operation.

Using a 3D 5-axis mill guided by HyperMill CAD software, Daishin Seiki was able to move its tools around a single piece of aluminum and machine an entire motorcycle helmet. The helmet has no seams, welds, or breaks. In the video above, you can see how Daishin Seiki accomplished this task, as both the tool and workpiece are rotated, twisted, and pivoted to account for all approach angles.
