Calibrating a Refractometer with a Solid Test Plate

This report reviews calibration of a refractometer with a solid test plate and analyzes the cause of poor repeatability of refractometer, and includes suggestions for improvement. Definition of solid test plates and advantages of using a solid test plate as a reference standard are stated. Apart from a comprehensive description of the procedure for obtaining a reading with a test plate, the paper also analyzes the cause for variation in refractive index between applications of the test piece. The method for obtaining a uniform thickness layer and importance of applying correct amount of contact fluid is highlighted.
