Mechanical Force Considerations in the Use of EMI-Environmental Gaskets

Publisher: Spira Manufacturing Corp.
Overview:
Selection of Gaskets available for EMI shielding, and the selection of fasteners based on the space and force required to ensure EMI and Environmental sealing quality is a significant challenge to the Design Engineering Community. The type of the fastener to be employed in holding a cover or door tight against the gasket seal, and the spacing of the fasteners are presented in this paper as the critical factors associated with the cost and maintainability. Four deflection and force equations that can be employed in determining the fastener spacing are detailed, illustrating the force effects based upon the variables associated with the gasket to be used. Variable values to be used in the equations are listed in a tabular form, presenting the results of the analysis on varying gasket materials, and cover plate thickness in the form of graphs.
