Polyurethane Coatings Provide over 20 Years of Protection for Homestead High-Level Bridge

Overview:
An evaluation of the performance of the polyurethane coatings used in Overcoat repainting of the Homestead high-level bridge in the year 1978, is presented in this paper. Coating application procedure followed during the repainting project is explained stating the various challenges that had to be addressed by the polyurethane coating system including the need to provide chemical, abrasion, and corrosion-resistance, as well as an attractive, high-gloss appearance. The surface preparation methods used, and the coating application process are described in detail furnishing pictures of the painted sections of the bridge, while the application properties and the performance requirements of the polyurethane coating system are listed, providing test performance criteria of the aliphatic polyurethane topcoat in a tabular form.
