Silicone Adhesives and Primers on Low Surface Energy Plastics and High Strength Metals

Publisher: NuSil Technology LLC
Overview:
The ability of silicone adhesives with the aid of primers to adhere to low surface energy plastics and to high strength metals is demonstrated in this paper. Some plastics are difficult to adhere to because of their low surface energy, available bond sites, and chemical interaction. Typical surface energy dyne levels of various substrates are presented in the form of a table. The paper illustrates the polycarbonate, polyetherimide, polyamide, polyurethane, acrylic, polysulphone, and polyimide structures and describes the applications of silicone adhesives on these substrates. Adhesion properties of primers are explained, in addition to the benefits of treating substrates with primers before using silicone adhesives for enabling better adhesion. Parameters used for testing the primer/adhesive system on various substrates are detailed. The report includes tables that depict the results of the adhesion tests. The white paper also reviews the mechanisms of failures in adhesively bonded joints.
