Fatigue Failure Analysis of Enhanced 35N LT®

Publisher: Fort Wayne Metals Research Products Corp.
Overview:
Results of a study that used Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) to determine the causes of fatigue failures in ASTM F562 (cobalt-nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy) material and the modified 35N LT® material are evaluated in this report. It summarizes the results of SEM analysis testing and introduces the SEM evaluation of the fractured samples. Solid wire and DFT composite wire fatigue test results of earlier studies are represented graphically in an S-N Curve format. Results of the SEM analysis of ASTM F 562 and 35N LT® in both solid and DFT configuration are explained in detail with the help of images of fracture faces and graphical representation of EDS spectrum. Inclusion sizes at each fracture origin area of ASTM F562 DFT are provided in a tabular form. Based on fracture fractography analysis, the report confirms the absence of titanium nitride inclusions in the new alloy 35N LT® at the fatigue failure initiation sites.
