Overview: Focusing on how to avoid the real cost of non-compliance in static control, this paper analyzes the best practice standards and procedures in preventing static caused fires and subsequent legal and insurance costs. It provides an insight into the static electricity best practice standards of National Fire Protection Association, American Petroleum Institute, and Cenelec committee CLC/TC 31, along with examples. The recommendations suggested in the listed standards to control static electricity generation in instances such as tank truck transfers and elimination of spark gaps are also highlighted. The difficult task of identifying the difference between hazardous area electrical protection approvals (FM, UL, CSA, ATEX) and equipment designed to control electrostatic ignitions is stated.
