Overview: Use of desiccant dryer systems in cold weather pneumatics in transportation applications is brought to focus in this paper which emphasizes the need of an adequate dryer system that is well maintained and serviced to eliminate moisture and prevent freezing in the air system. Basic function of a desiccant dryer is explained and the differences between single and twin tower desiccant dryers are described along with their individual applications and maintenance requirements. Information about valves, cylinders, and air control components that are suited for cold weather pneumatics in transportation applications is covered in this paper. It also analyzes the causes of pneumatic system failures in train, truck/trailer, bus and coach applications, and the significance of using drying systems in such applications.
