Overview: Use of Scanning Electron Microscopy and Optical Emission Spectrometry for performing surface analysis, chemical analysis, and imaging on a variety of materials is described in this paper. It includes a graphical representation of a sample EDS spectrum and images of a scanning electron microscope and optical emission spectrometer. The process of SEM/EDS micro analysis and the optical emission spectrometry are explained in detail, stating the typical applications for optical emission spectrometry, which continues to be the reference technique for direct chemical analysis of solid metallic samples.
