Overview:
Specialized corrosion investigations and analytical techniques offered by MTi that are used to identify corrosion mechanisms as well as to determine the suitability of materials for specific conditions are detailed in this paper, which includes 3 examples of metal corrosion testing. Identification of micro-biologically influenced corrosion is illustrated providing Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) image of corroded carbon steel pipe fittings from a fire suppression system. A high magnification SEM image of crevice corrosion at the location of a Teflon washer on a 316L stainless steel plate is included. The third example includes a SEM/BSE (Back Scatter Electron) image of a corrosion pit associated with stress corrosion cracking in a stainless steel drum, explaining the findings of the corrosion analysis.
