Failure Analysis - Forensic Engineering: Analysis of a Leaking Diesel Engine Manifold

Publisher: Metallurgical Technologies, Inc.
Overview:
This paper illustrates the forensic failure analysis of a pressure tested diesel engine manifold that exhibited a pinhole defect. An image showing the pinhole leak defect in the manifold and a close-up image of the pinhole defect are provided, along with a close-up view of a small cross-section through the pinhole, revealing the two significant voids. SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) image of the surface inside one of the voids is illustrated and the high magnification images of microstructure of the dendritic penetrations along the edge of the void are included. The paper concludes by analyzing the test results, stating that the pinhole defect was a result of a significant casting void in the cast aluminium manifold.
