Overview: The limiting factors of mechanical temperature and pressure switches in process control applications are detailed in this paper, describing how two of those limitations were addressed in the latest switch design developed by Microprecision. Measurement principles of mechanical switches are explained using a diagram and the switching characteristics of a snap action switch are illustrated. The limiting factors of mechanical switches such as dead zone passing and switch differential movement, and their affect on the final pressure switch accuracy are detailed using diagrams. The paper also highlights the high precision capabilities of Microprecision Electronics' V4 switch range (MP500), which were redesigned to reduce dead zone passing and switch differential movement to increase accuracy for process applications that rely on the physical variables of temperature and pressure.
