Deploying Intelligent Power Supplies to Save Energy

As the cost of controls equipment and energy usage continues to climb, using energy-efficient and intelligent power supplies provides cost savings from the energy consumption standpoint, as well as the control sustainability aspect. This paper reviews the energy performance of today's high-end power supplies and details how a better understanding of the power supply's condition can enable the end user to improve the energy efficiency and reliability of the entire control system. Indications that can be used to measure DC power quality and help the sustainability of the control system are outlined, bringing to light an inherent fault found in most PSM power supplies. The paper highlights the advantages offered by Phoenix Contact's QUINT SFB power supplies equipped with Selective Fuse Breaking (SFB) technology, which ensure the DC reliability in critical applications.
