Design/Build Strategies to Reduce the Threat of Moisture: Spray Foam Insulation Can Play Multiple Roles in Minimizing Moisture Issues

Highlighting how insulation plays a vital role in the performance and durability of a building for obtaining energy savings, comfort, and enhanced air quality, this paper lists that bulk moisture transfer, wicking/capillary action, air leakage, and diffusion are the four key mechanisms of water movement which cause moisture related problems. The paper details how spray foam insulation with air barrier, insulating and vapor permeability properties could fit into a design/build strategy of moisture control and suppress the key forms of moisture movement. It briefly explains about the role of spray foam insulation like ICYNENE in moisture controlling technique with four different applications. The paper concludes that by applying spray foam insulation moisture control can be enhanced resulting in building health and comfort.
