A Comparison of the Environmental Attributes of Thermoplastic vs. Thermoset Composites

Stating that aerospace industry has increased the usage of composite structural components, this paper presents thermoplastic composites as most preferable components which reduce the parts cost. The paper compares the advantages of thermoplastics over thermoset composites with respect to cost, process, performance and environmental effects. It presents polyetheretherkenote (PEEK), polyethermide (PEI), and polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) that are commonly used thermoplastic matrices, and suggests PPS manufactured by Ticona would offer low cost for manufacturing aerospace grade composites. Figures illustrating cost comparison of conventional vs. candidate composite system, typical TP and TS composite process temperature cycles with energy, and keel beam are also included.
